The mountain pass area of the Klausen is without doubt one of the most scenic in Switzerland. The route follows the high-level Schächental path with its fantastic landscapes, majestic mountains and unique flora and fauna.
For centuries the most direct means of passage between cantons Uri and Glarus was through the wild and romantic Schächen valley. Nowadays the high-level path on the sunny side of the valley starts at the Klausen pass, gently rising and falling high above Spiringen, Bürglen and Altdorf all the way to Eggbergen, while offering magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. The Schächen valley high-level path also offers much with regards to flora and fauna. High levels of precipitation and the impermeable terrain have given rise to numerous moors, which are home to many rare and protected plants and animals.

Directions
From Klausen pass, the route takes you through delightful alpine pastures to Untere Balm. After a short section on the main pass road you follow an unmade road to the Heidmanegg alp. The route then follows narrow tracks through ever-changing, light forests at Äbnet and through flowering alp pastures. Above Ratzi you then follow a wider unmade road to Biel before crossing the Selez basin and reaching little Lake Flesch, a good picnic/barbecue spot. After the Grüner Boden and a light forest, you arrive at the Eggbergen aerial cableway terminus. The fantastic views from here of Lake Uri and of Canton Uri's largest steep-slope hay harvesting area beneath the Rophaien rounds off this grandiose walking experience.
