According to legend, the three representatives of the founding cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden pledged themselves to the Eternal Alliance of the Three Forest Cantons on the Rütli meadow on 1 August 1291. Ever since, every Swiss person has regarded the Rütli as a memorial site for the historic event of the Rütli oath.
